So is English Language Dead or Evolving?

In my opinion I think English language is definitely evolving. Technology has become an important part of our lives. We live and depend on technology all the time, Mobile Phones, Laptops, Computers, and Television etc. However it’s not only because of technology that language changed, it’s also because of the media and what they influence people into reacting. Such as movies that encourage text messaging language as ‘cool’ or ‘hip’. Because of this the younger generation are sucked into a deep hole of bad influenza.

Another reason why language is evolving is because of the advertising of promotions and deals from a network company such as maybe Vodafone or Telecom. These companies advertise unlimited or cheap text messaging promotions which again encourages the public to text in phonetic language. But is it the companies fault again, no, it’s not. It’s still the public choosing to write the way they prefer to. Even adults enjoy communicating in text messaging language; the only difference is they don’t forget their English academic skills.

I’m definitely not against text messaging language, because I still get caught up doing it myself. But to make the world a better place for English Language to survive in the world, we still need to know our English academic skills. We need to be aware of the simplest rules in English which is what I introduced for learning to write academically; English Grammar, English Spelling and English Punctuation and How to write a paragraph.

In conclusion, I feel that English language has evolved and that is to Slang language (combination of text messaging, relay chatting and social networking). And in addition English Language may be in trouble due to people not knowing the basic structure of the English Language.

iReflect for Week 12

This week’s reflection will be on the importance of punctuations. Punctuations are important in academic writing because it helps separates sentences and differentiates the tone in reading and speaking. Majority of people forget and are confused when to use commas or apostrophes because of the frequent usage of text messaging language. This is how text messaging language is ruining academic writing because of the younger generation that have affected they was we speak and write through communication language.

I remember when I had experienced to write an academic letter before joining university, I had been on holidays for six months before that and I did not realize that I had not used any commas for my letter, and my dad had checked my work with shock wondering what exactly I have been doing in high school. From then onwards I noticed that my frequent text messaging had influenced me to continuously think with phonetic spellings and structures.

For this reflection I want my learners and audience to understand the use of applying punctuations in academic writing. I found online teaching videos for punctuations. This should give a clear understanding on what punctuations are and when you need to use them.

iReflect for Week 11

Well now that we have learnt to spell correctly and started learning about how to start writing academically, I have researched some videos to learn from. So far I have found 3 videos that are important to learn about academic writing. First of all I like to make sure that my learners are secured with good material to learn and understand properly what I have introduced before which is Basic English Grammar and Spellings.

Also while researching I found an interesting difficulty that people come across in academic writing. This difficulty is when to use ‘you’re’ and ‘your’. These are common difficulties everyone faces at one point and if you are still not sure which word is used when, the video is just a click away. These are referred casually as confusing words. I even mentioned in my older posts that I still get confused between its, it’s and its’. This is all connected to Punctuations.

Punctuation is a set of symbols used in writing to help indicate something about the structure of sentences, or to assist readers in knowing when to change the rhythm or the stress of their speaking (What is Punctuation? 2003).

iReflect for Week 10

For this week’s reflection I’ll be introducing basic grammar in order to begin writing academically. Grammar in English can be tricky to understand or remember. People until today still forget what was learned right in the beginning of primary school. After teaching Basic English grammar I will then include a structured model to start up writing academically. It’s quite simple when you are aware of the simplest English rules.

What is Grammar? Grammar in English are the nouns, adjectives, verbs, adverbs preposition, conjunctions and interjection and so on. But for now I will only be concentrating on what these terms are and to help learn the basics first. When writing academically it is important to know what these terms are. This shows that you are aware of what you are writing and what it states in English Grammar. I found a perfect image that shows what these means. With this image you will know exactly what the terms define.

The image is supposed to give an idea of what grammar is. As it states at the top of the image that this is rhyme used for children to have remember and have an idea about grammar. I find this an easy way to remember important grammar terms to be able to understand writing academically. Although this is for children, don't be afraid to learn from this. It helps us tremendously to remember the terms and get a kick start.

*New Feature* On the left side of the blog I've added a gadget that will be quite handy to improve vocabulary skills. It's a Hangman Game. I've come up with a way to improve spellings of words. This should be a good idea to start improving spelling skills and get TXT MSGING language phonetics out of the way for now.
